What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic soundwave technology to help relieve pain and stimulate the body's natural healing process. The treatment delivers precise soundwaves deep into injured muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues, targeting the source of pain without affecting the surrounding healthy tissue. Shockwave Therapy can help improve circulation, break down scar tissue, reduce inflammation, relieve chronic pain, and promote faster healing for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.

Conditions Commonly Treated

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis/golfer's elbow
  • Achilles/Patellar tendinopathy
  • Hip pain
  • Muscle trigger points
  • Scar tissue and soft tissue adhesions
  • Sports and overuse injuries

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Shockwave therapy is generally well tolerated by most patients. During treatment, you may experience mild discomfort or deep aching and tingling sensations as the therapy targets the affected area. Our experienced clinicians carefully adjust the treatment settings to your individual comfort level, ensuring the procedure is both effective and as comfortable as possible.

The number of treatment sessions varies depending on your specific condition and individual response to therapy. Many patients experience noticeable improvement after just a few sessions, thanks to the precision of PiezoWave therapy and the expertise of our experienced clinicians.

After your treatment, we recommend resting the treated area for 48 hours and avoiding anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) and ice, as these may interfere with the body's natural healing response. If you experience soreness, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or a heat pack may be used for comfort. Avoid high-impact activities during the recovery period, but gentle, low-impact movement—such as walking—is encouraged to promote healing, as well as staying well hydrated.

Shockwave is unsuitable in the following circumstances:

  • If you are pregnant
  • If you have a blood clotting disorder (including thrombosis)
  • If you are taking oral anti-coagulants
  • If you have received a Steroid injection within 6 weeks
  • If you have a Pacemaker fitted
  • If tumours are present at the treatment site
  • If you have an infection or skin abrasion at the treatment site

Yes. In most cases, you can safely receive shockwave therapy if you have pins, plates, or other metal implants. Treatment can typically be performed as long as the shockwaves are not applied directly over the implanted hardware. Instead, the therapy is focused on the surrounding soft tissues to promote healing while minimizing the risk of discomfort or irritation.

Yes. Shockwave therapy can generally be performed safely in patients with silicone implants. Research suggests that Shockwave Therapy may help reduce fibrotic scar tissue, including capsular contracture around breast implants.
